Benefits of Subtext
- The app is free for teachers and students.
- The app comes with a number of free fiction texts, but its value lies in its nonfiction resources. You can search nonfiction articles by topic, and by grade/reading level. Teachers can also upload PDFs of nonfiction articles they want students to read on Subtext, as well as pull any nonfiction article from the web and save it to their library to read on Subtext.
- The app's fiction texts are aligned to the Common Core's Essential Standards Exemplar books for those grade levels, so teachers can ensure they are choosing rigorous and appropriate texts. There are also a number of free short stories and poems in the library Subtext makes available for teachers.
- Students can highlight and annotate directly on to the text just by touching a spot in the text with their finger. The highlight tool is extremely easy to use, as well as the box that pops up to type a comment.
- The app offers even more benefits to teachers who purchase the premium membership (must contact them for a quote).
- The app allows you to use your membership at other sites to log in -- Renaissance Place, Facebook, Google, and Edmodo.
- The app also comes with an extremely helpful "Help" tab, with a number of tutorial websites on how to use each strategy. (see picture)
